Does hearing aid technology increase hearing comprehension?

August 10, 2017

Studies have revealed a link between cognitive brain decline and hearing loss. Though no one is sure why this is, the link is believed to be a result of the brain straining to understand speech and sounds.

As more research supports this link, hearing aid technology is becoming increasingly important to hearing aid users. This technology is designed to help hearing aid wearers hear clearer sounds so their brain doesn’t have to strain to make sense of the sounds around them.

In a clinical test, people using hearing aids with specialized technology improved cognitive thinking by 30 percent and retained 20 percent more from their conversations. This technology focuses on improving the following:

  • Speech recognition
  • Identifying sound sources
  • Understanding quiet voices better
  • Reduced feedback
  • Adjusting your hearing aid to focus on sounds you want to hear

Rather than amplifying all sounds, this technology allows the audiologist to amplify specific sounds. As a result, you (and your brain) don’t have to strain to hear what people are saying, even in a noisy environment. For more about this technology, contact Audiology & Hearing Services in Charlotte by filling out a contact form or calling 704-412-7975.
